Snakes of Ontario

We’re Snakes, ya, and we’ve been around the block a few times. Three seasoned musicians teamed up with a visual artist and now songwriter to bring you singular songs about falling down, floating in space and being in love with your car.

Snakes of Ontario are:
Freddie Towe - lead vocals, guitar and songwriter
Rachel Melas - bass and vocals
Conny Nowe - drums and vocals
Celina Carroll -baritone ukulele and vocals

Conny Nowe and Rachel Melas began their musical voyage as a rock 'n roll rhythm section in the now infamous Vancouver punk scene of the early 80's.  Moving East to Toronto they played with legendary world music band Mother Tongue, Reggae/Rock band Random Order and backed up Dub Poet Lillian Allen. In the millennium they turned their musical attention to Jazz  and Folk. They currently perform together in Cajun and Zydeco band Swamperella,  Klezmer band The Horables, Swing band The Sonny Balcones and are very happy to be returning to their punk rock roots with Snakes of Ontario!

Freddie Towe became songwriter after moving to Hastings Highlands in 2015. Freddie is a visual artist /songwriter living outside of Bancroft Ontario. 

They teamed up with old friends Rachel Melas, Conny Nowe and Celina Carroll. As the Snakes of Ontario the group recorded a debut album. 

Freddie Towe is also visual artist living and working locally. Recently they have exhibiting their work their artwork at Wildewood Gallery ,Maynooth, Art Gallery of Bancroft, Ludmilia Gallery in Peterborough and the Bancroft Studio Tour. Previous to moving to the area Freddie was showing their work in Toronto, running an Art Garage as well as teaching art in the Toronto School board.

Celina Carroll has performed and toured extensively over the last 35 years with diverse musical projects including Mother Tongue, The Nancy Sinatras, The Matriphiles and a traditional Bahamian Junkanoo ensemble. Current projects include electronic duo ina unt ina, experimental band Mintz and The Untitled Carolyn Taylor Project which recently launched a double vinyl album. 

She is writing and recording a solo project under the name CDMC and has recently reunited with long time musical  collaborator Chip Yarwood to perform live as seewhysound.
